Spartan K5 is a Mechanical Beast that served as monster of the week in Mazinger Z Episode 14, Rage! The Sleeping Giant, Spartan!. Accordingly to Dr. Hell, it's design was inspired by roman gladiators and the mohawk people. It seems to have a mind of its own as it initialy refused to fight.
Appearance[]
Spartan K5 is a warrior with a deep blue armor and a large jaw. The top of its head features a mohawk-like design with a magenta line on its belly. It features some pink and maroon accessory including some bolts and 'straps'. It wields a trident and a large shield.
Personality[]
Spartan K5 is typically gentle and completely harmless, and even when it's provoked into attacking, it refuses to finish off its enemy using lethal force.
Abilities and Equipment[]
Spartan K5 uses its trident for close combat, the trident can also produce hurricane force winds when spun. Its shield can protect it from heat attacks like the Breast Fire. It is also able to jump at a very high altitude. It is also one of the few Mechanical Beasts with a form of conscience.
History[]
If it were not for Baron Ashura's intervention, Dr. Hell would have had Spartan K7 destroyed. Powerful as it might be, Spartan was unreliable. It refused to obey his commands and only ever fought in self-defense, refusing to even finish off the Kikaiju Dr. Hell set upon it. Baron Ashura begged to be allowed to make use of Spartan K7, believing it held the power to finally destroy Mazinger Z. In the end, Dr. Hell relented, allowing the two of them to make their way towards Japan.
Soon after setting foot in the city, Spartan K7 was confronted by Mazinger Z and Aphrodite Ace. Instead of obeying Baron Ashura's orders, it laid down on a hill, ignoring the arrival of its opponents and Ashura's pleas. Koji intended to attack, but after Sayaka pointed out Spartan's strange behavior, he decided to wait and see if the Kikaiju would prove itself a danger before taking any action. Spartan K7 never attacked and was left to its own devices.
The incident soon became public knowledge. The media picked up on the story, mocking Dr. Hell for sending a pacifist Kikaiju to attack Japan. Furious, Dr. Hell ordered Spartan K7 to be destroyed. Meanwhile, Japan's government, worried about the potential danger of having a Kikaiju running free in the city, also ordered the Photon Power Laboratory to destroy it.
The Iron Mask Corps were the first to arrive. In the dead of night, they rigged Spartan K7 with explosives. On the side of the Photon Power Laboratory, Koji and Sayaka remained reluctant to go along with the destruction of Spartan K7.
Ignorant of the two parties moving to destroy Spartan and still believing it to be harmless, Boss, Shiro, Nuke, and Mucha gathered beside the Kikaiju to play music and dance. Unbeknownst to them, the music triggered suppressed memories from Spartan's soul. The cheering reminded it of the gladiator arena, and the drums echoed the war drums its tribe sounded before battle. The conjunction of these factors ignited its fighting spirit, and it finally became violent.
Mazinger Z and Aphrodite Ace were forced to engage Spartan K7 to stop it, but it proved to be too much for the duo. Its shield rendered all attacks ineffective while the spear was capable of piercing through Super Alloy Z. Fortunately, before the worst could happen, the untimely detonation of the explosives planted by the Iron Masks spelled the end of Spartan K7.
