Mazinkaiser (マジンカイザー Majinkaizā) is an updated version of Mazinger Z that first appeared in Super Robot Wars F Final. Initially portrayed as an evolved form of Mazinger Z, Mazinkaiser has since been primarily depicted as a distinct, standalone machine in later appearances.

Development[]

Mazinkaiser made his debut in Super Robot Wars F Final, part of the Super Robot Wars game franchise, and has since become a recurring, playable unit in later titles. This series brought together iconic mecha franchises, including Getter Robo, Mobile Suit Gundam, and Mazinger Z.

Mazinkaiser is believed to have been created to provide Koji Kabuto with a more powerful machine to match other protagonists. In early games, characters like Amuro Ray and the Getter Team received progressively stronger units—such as the RX-93 ν Gundam and Getter Robo G—offering a sense of power progression. However, Koji didn’t receive a comparable upgrade in the Mazinger Z series; instead, he was succeeded by Tetsuya Tsurugi, who piloted Great Mazinger.

To keep Koji on par with other protagonists, Super Robot Wars II initially allowed him to pilot Great Mazinger, but fans felt this overshadowed Tetsuya. In response, later games returned Great Mazinger to Tetsuya, and Mazinkaiser was eventually introduced to give Koji his own high-powered upgrade. Since then, Mazinkaiser has provided Koji with the power needed to stay competitive with other iconic mecha, consistently being one of the strongest units available to the player.

Appearance[]

Mazinkaiser is a towering, humanoid machine with a dark, aggressive design. His body is primarily black, with deep blue forearms and legs that resemble armor over a metallic silver frame, highlighted by bright red accents. His head features a crown-like structure with outward-flaring, angular horns and a fierce, stern expression, partially obscured by a grill that covers his mouth.

His shoulders are broad and heavily armored, with large, rounded segments. At the center of his distinctively shaped chest, a red and black "Z" emblem stands out, symbolizing his power. Mazinkaiser’s biceps are exaggerated to resemble bulging muscles, leading down to his forearms, which are encased in heavy gauntlets.

A pair of large, bat-like wings in vibrant red extend from his back, arching outward and curving slightly downward, adding to his dramatic appearance. His legs are thick and heavily armored, with a layered design that conveys strength and stability, ending in robust, boot-like feet that complete his imposing stance.

The SRW version of Mazinkaiser has deep blue forearms and legs, distinguishing it from the Kaiser and Infinitism versions, which have those areas in black.

Super Robot Wars F Final []

In Super Robot Wars F Final, Mazinkaiser is the evolved form of Mazinger Z created through the use of Getter Rays.

Super Robot Wars Alpha[]

In the Alpha timeline, Mazinkaiser is the original Mazinger that predates Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger. The undisclosed experiment that resulted in the death of Koji and Shiro's parents turns out to have been the development of Mazinkaiser's photon reactor. Afterwards, Jūzō Kabuto deemed the machine far too powerful and dangerous to ever see the light of day, and sealed him beneath the Photon Power Laboratory. The screams and roars of the imprisoned Kaiser could be occasionally be heard from the upper levels of the laboratory.

Mazinkaiser was only activated thanks to a crisis. While Mazinger Z was being overhauled, the Mycene forces attacked the Photon Power Laboratory with an army of Mass-Produced Great Mazingers, forcing Koji to resort to activating Mazinkaiser in a desperate bid to defend his friends.

This version of Mazinkaiser has three modes, which are signified on its chest jewel. Without the Pilder, "Demon (魔) Mode" allows Mazinkaiser independent movement. "Z Mode" is Mazinkaiser's normal, piloted mode. Very little is known about its "God (神) Mode", though in-game dialogue implies that it is on par with a full-strength Shin Getter Robo.

Super Robot Wars X[]

Super Robot Wars X marked the return of the SRW F Final version of Mazinkaiser, combined with elements of its SRW Alpha incarnation. Here, Mazinkaiser is described as a "Mazinger of light" summoned by Zeus, along with Mazin Emperor G, from different universes to help Koji and Tetsuya to oppose Mazinger ZERO.

Super Robot Wars 30[]

Following the Dreisstager's defeat of Dr. Hell and Infinity in the game's adaptation of Mazinger Z: Infinity, Hell and Infinity return. What's more, Hell's forces capture not just Mazinger Z, but also the Getter Team's Shin Getter Robo G. Once the group has retaken both machines, Koji applies what he learned about the multiverse and thinks of a robot to surpass Mazinger Z. No sooner does Koji finish the design than an Infinitism version of Mazinkaiser arrives from the future, transcending time itself in order to preserve the possibility of its existence.

Koshiryoku (Photon Power) Beam: Mazinkaiser unleashes pure Photonic Energy in the form of beams from his eyes.
Rust Tornado: Mazinkaiser fires a trio of high-power tornadoes from his mouth grill, releasing corrosive particles within the winds.
Giganto Missile: Mazinkaiser launches a devastating missile from his torso.
Turbo Smasher Punch: Mazinkaiser fires his forearm spinning at extremely high speed at his opponents to devastating efect.
Fire Blaster: The chest fin acts as a heat sink for Mazinkaiser's Photonic Energy reactor, allowing him to release thermal energy in a devastating beam. The Fire Blaster is capable of instantly melting Mechanical Beasts and Warrior Beasts from a large distance.
Shoulder Slicer: A twin set of one-handed swords are ejected from the compartments in Kaiser's shoulders.

Dynamite Tackle: Mazinkaiser can charge his body with Photonic Energy and perform a powerful body slam attack. (SRW F Final)
Kaiser Nova: Mazinkaiser can unleash an incredible amount of Photonic Energy from his body all at once, creating a massive explosion.
Mazin Double Emperor Strike: Mazin Emperor G and Mazinkaiser strike poses and activate their crests, creating a tornado in the process. The tornado explodes, revealing a fully-charged Mazin duo. Mazin Emperor G fires off a Thunder Bolt Breaker while Mazinkaiser fires off a mighty Koshiryoku Beam. (Super Robot Wars X only)

Like the Mazingers before it, Mazinkaiser's cockpit is located in a separate vehicle which functions as a jet fighter. It is armed with a laser beam in the tip of the nosecone.

Trivia[]

The Super Alloy New Zα is different in the anime from the original Super Robot Wars version, as it can't regenerate (or is never seen/implied to do so). On the other hand, the Super Alloy New Zα in the manga was actually damaged and Mazinkaiser's arm got torn off by one of Dr. Hell's mechanical beasts and was never shown to regenerate from it.
Mazinkaiser has appeared only three times alongside Grendizer, in a 3-episode OVA and two cellphone games Super Robot Wars X-Omega and Super Robot Wars DD.
