Koji Kabuto (兜 甲児 Kabuto Kōji) is the pilot of Mazinger Z and an a friend of Duke Fleed.
Background[]
Thanks to the patents inherited from his grandfather's inventions, Koji amassed a considerable fortune. The profits from the Kabuto Foundation were then used to support his humanitarian efforts with Mazinger Z, including disaster relief and defending the world from Dr. Hell's Mechanical Beasts.

After Sayaka rescues Duke in the desert, they are attacked by Doubla M2. Koji comes to their aid and decides to look after the amnesiac Duke until he regains his memories. He invites Duke to join them in their daily lives but initially keeps his identity as Mazinger Z's pilot a secret.

Etymology[]
- The name Koji means "instep, shell, grade A, first in rank" (甲) (ko) and "child, infant, kid, young of animals, tot" (児) (ji).
- Koji's surname Kabuto means "helmet, headpiece" (兜), which fits Koji's role as the Mazinger Z's pilot as he docks a vehicle on top of the mech's head.
